A RESEARCH-BASED POLICY SUPPORT ORGANISATION

The Joint Research Centre
Roland Schenkel
"Europe faces public concern about complex issues such as food contamination, genetic modification, chemical hazards, global change, environment and health, and nuclear safety. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) supports EU policy-makers in the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of policies to tackle such trans-national and global problems. In effect, the JRC is a research-based policy support organisation working for the EU policy-maker."

Roland Schenkel, Director-General

MISSION OF THE JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE

"The mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national."

Event at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, marking the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union, as well as the start of the German EU Presidency.

On January 8, the JRC Ispra celebrated the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU as well as the beginning of the German Presidency of the European Council. The ceremony in front of the entrance gate of the JRC Ispra attracted around 300 staff members and visitors and was attended by the Consul Generals of Bulgaria and Germany, and the Consul of Romania. On the occasion of the German Presidency, the entrance gate to the JRC Ispra was wrapped in printed textiles to simulate the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, celebrating the reunification of East and West Germany as well as the upcoming 50th birthday of the European Union.
