Julian Hale

Julian Hale has gained a wide range of experience of European Union and international affairs from working as a translator/interpreter, lecturer and journalist. He has good in-depth knowledge of a range of subjects, including EU foreign affairs policy, EU security and defence policy, EU justice and home affairs policy, plus economics, sport and communications. He is also able to familiarise himself with new subjects relatively quickly thanks to his training as an interpreter.
Julian Hale
In 1996, he moved from the world of translating and interpreting – where his clients included major multinational corporations, marketing organisations and European institutions – into the media. He translated and summarised articles for Agence Europe and Reuters before writing for and editing an online international news product for the French national news agency AFP.

Since 2003, Julian has been reporting, writing and editing for major media organisations such as the France 24 TV news channel and Defense News. He has written articles on a range of subjects for a number of more specialist EU publications such as the Parliament Magazine (e.g. on multilingualism and on the environment), EU Commerz magazine (e.g. on Turkey’s enlargement prospects, the state of the German economy) and Europolitics (defence and sport issues). He also produced news stories, put together TV news items and interviewed MEPs for the EUX.TV EU affairs channel. His TV production work has included covering events on security technologies, an EU-Ukraine summit and an international food fair in Paris.

He also works as a rapporteur for EU and other international conferences, particularly on foreign policy plus justice and home affairs issues. He has done media training for international companies and moderated events in Brussels, including on the now defunct EU Constitutional Treaty.

Julian Hale has a BA in Modern Languages from Bristol University (UK) and a Masters in European Studies from Bath (UK), Siena (IT) and Carlos III (ES) universities. He speaks excellent French, Spanish, Italian and German, plus some Portuguese, in addition to his English mother-tongue.
