5th. Report on Econmic, Social and Teritorial Cohesion

The European Commission submits a report every three years on the progress made towards achieving economic, social and territorial cohesion. This fifth report presents a current assessment of regional disparities in the EU. It also sets out the Commission's ideas for the future of Cohesion Policy for the period post 2013, following the EU Budget Review

The Art Partner Project and the European Year Journalist Award 2010 are two key activities in the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.European Year Against Social Exclusion

Open to photographic students in all EU Member States interested in current social issues, aware of the fight against poverty and ready for a human adventure were invited to participate.

"Art can't eradicate poverty but it can give dignity and confidence back to people. It can help to recreate social links. Living in precarious circumstances forces people to focus on their basic needs. There's no room for cultural activities. But when a person is excluded from culture, they're pushed to the margins of society. By taking part in an art project, by creating, they can feel more integrated into society. Cultural action makes people exist as human beings without reducing them to social subjects. It confers an identity which allows people to escape from shame, a source of isolation"

European Year Gaianst Social Exclusion All the photographs (which fulfilled the selection criteria) will be able to be viewed on a dedicated website and also in an exhibition of about fifty photos in Brussels at special exhibition at the end of November 2010. If a photo is selected, the student will gain visibility at the European level, and will receive a participation certificate, the exhibition catalogue and postcards printed with the photo.

The European Year (EY) Journalist Award 2010 was created to support and recognise journalists who contribute to an increased awareness and a broader understanding of poverty and social exclusion through their work.

The competition was open to print, online, and audiovisual journalists who have articles published or news reports aired that cover the issues of poverty and social exclusion in the European Union. Their articles or news reports had to be published or aired between 1 October 2009 and 24 September 2010 in a media outlet who has a headquarter editorial office in one of the 27 EU Member States, Iceland, or Norway.

The objectives of the EY Journalist Award were:

  • To recognise excellence in journalism in coverage of the issues of poverty and social exclusion
  • To create awareness of the EY2010 campaign among mass media representatives across the 27 EU Member States, Iceland, and Norway
  • To promote a better understanding of poverty and social exclusion; the causes and possible solutions.
